This chair is neither shell nor skeleton. It looks like a stick structure but has only two surfaces; one outside and one inside, both meeting in a very sharp edge. As has become Miyazaki's trademark, the sculpturing of surfaces does not stop anywhere. There is a continuous shape to be explored everywhere, allowing your hands to wander the curves in the wood.
